It’s no secret that at 4 months old Li’l Foot woke up in the morning with a dry diaper and I took that as a possible opportunity to get her introduced to the potty. Some thought I was crazy. Some thought she was advanced. Some just entertained the idea for a while. I didn’t take it too seriously. If she wanted to do it fine, if she didn’t then fine too. If she ever had a problem with it I didn’t push her. We just kind of embarked on the experience together, neither of us knowing what to expect and me with very little expectations.
Li’l Foot has been doing great at the potty. She could wear a diaper for days on end if we let her because it hasn’t been dirtied. I can’t remember when we bought this last box of diapers. She’s kept her diapers clean, told us when she has to go at times and generally we’ve saved a bunch of diapers in the process.
Yesterday she really wanted to wear her big girl underwear. I had brought them with us to Maine but never took them out because I just wanted to relax and not worry about chasing a toddler in underwear, reminding her to go potty if she had to. They were laying around, and she saw the Minnie Mouse ones and absolutely loved them. So I let her wear them. And I think this is where mothers learn to nag. Potty training is it. If there were ever a time in a mother’s life when she hones her nagging skills it’s when their child is potty training. Multiply that by 3 or 4 kids and wowza, mom’s become not only pros at nagging but if it were a college degree, she’d collect her doctorate in nagging. Every 5 seconds, sometimes every 3 seconds I asked Li’l Foot if she had to go yesterday. I got sick of hearing me.
She did really well yesterday though. No accidents. Even told us when she had to poop too. (You didn’t actually think we’d get through this post without mentioning poop, did you?) The pooping was key because then we were able to go to grandma’s pool and not worry about putting a swimmy diaper on. Last night we had company over, our friend, the priest who married us. Li’l Foot was well behaved except for wanting to go play int he neighbor’s yard because they decided to come outside while we were out…big shocker! I bathed her and got her into her jammies and asked her if she wanted a diaper or big girl underwear with Winnie the Pooh? The answer was a resounding “BIG GIRL UNDERWEAR…POOOOOOOOOOOOH!!!” And I sung her the Winnie the Pooh song which she thought was fun and new and exciting, so I had to dig out my Winnie the Pooh CD of music.
She hung out with us a little while longer and then I asked her to go potty one more time after some time had passed and them she promptly passed out in my arms. She slept all night in her big girl underwear without incident. She woke up (probably from a dream or soemthine) at about 12:45 but went right back down and said she didn’t need to go. She popped her head in my room at 4:30 a.. and snuggled with me and fell back to sleep until 7 a.m. We got up, and she went on the potty. She amazes me. She really does. She’s not even 2 & 1/2 yet and she’s knocking this out of the park. (Note: I realized she’s almost 2 & 1/2 the other day and realized I really can’t say to people “Oh, she just turned 2 in January” anymore, when they ask me how old she is! **sniff*sniff** That is a huge overwhelming feeling, I don’t know why, but it is!)
So, today she went to school in big girl underwear. I also sent 3 more pairs of underwear and 4 outfits. Depending on how today goes at school I guess I’ll be making a trip to Kohl’s for more big girl underwear for her. So fingers crossed, let’s hope it goes well. Perhaps these diapers I have can just be put away for emergency stash for Lyla or Izzy when they come over.
I’d also like to note that I am still not a pull up fan. They are so expensive and just didn’t work for Li’l Foot.
P.S. Dear Fruit of the Loom Kids &/or Hanes Kids, Please consider making Finding Nemo underwear for little girls! My girl really loves Nemo and if she had those, I am certain she wouldn’t dirty them. Also some Horton Hears a Who underwear would be fabulous too! Again, I’m certain she’d keep them clean and this potty training thing would be nipped right in the bud.

Yet another area I suck at: potty training. Morgan is 3 1/2. She’s showed no interest until the last couple of weeks when she says she wants to go. She’s managed to go each time I get her on the potty, but also still going in her diapers.
Way to Li’l Foot!!
