Sorry to do this to you, but Maine will have to be in installments. I just can’t wrap my head around the whole thing at one time…IT WAS THAT GOOD!!! I’ve chosen to create photo montages so as not to make these posts too lengthy. I won’t describe every single picture, you can examine them and make of them what you like. Some are self explanatory and others I will explain. If you have any specific questions I encourage you to ask. Maine is such a beautiful place, I will love sharing it with you.
We had the wonderful opportunity to be asked to go away with Pocklock and her family. I was so honored that they would think of us and want us to be a part of their vacation. I know how much their trips there mean to them, and I was so excited to be a part of it. We weren’t leaving at the same time though.
We got an early-ish start on Thursday morning so that we could go into Portland and take the ferry over to Peaks Island. I have family history there. I remember vacationing there with my mom and dad as a kid. That is where my appreciation and love for snails began. I have many memories there. I needed to go there. I loved being there. It was a such a special time for me on this trip.
The pictures below are simply getting to Peaks Island. We arrived at Casco Bay early for the next ferry and I took some pictures of my surroundings. Some of the pictures below are while we were on out 20 minute ferry ride. That seagull was so posing for me!!!

Peaks Island is a beautiful place. You can travel it on bike in less than an hour or so, but it’s worth every second. There isn’t much to do, but that truly is the beauty of this place. I can imagine no other more serene peacful place on earth than Peaks Island…except when you have a toddler in tow…it’s not AS relaxing, but I was so happy to share this place with her and look forward to future visits when she was appreciate it too. Below are just some of the sites you can see on the island.

I love the 8th Maine. It’s gotten to be a little pricey for what you get for staying there, but nonetheless I love this place because I feel my dad’s presence when I’m there. He used to go there as a kid and shared his memories with me when he and my mom would bring me there. The images below are the rustic 8th Maine Regiment house on Peaks Island…

It is glorified camping at its finest. And that is Dick Adams…he owns the joint…and has been carrying that same duck tape wallet around since I’ve known him, only with new layers of duct tape every so often. Quite the character!
Some views from wround the island…

The middle band is more or less the view right outside the back of the 8th Maine. The bottom right picture is of a rock shaped like a seat. I have many memories of throwing thousands of small rocks into that bigger rock and the object was the get the little rocks to stay on the shelf. It’s harder than it looks…trust me!!!
So that was Peaks Island in a nutshell. I am so happy we were able to get out there if only for a couple hours. We hadn’t checked the time table and had just missed the 6 o’clock ferry and had to wait for the 7:45 ferry. We wound up getting a pizza from the little market on the island and some bottles of beer and sitting down by the landing. It turned out to be the best pizza we’ve had outside of New York!!! And just a really nice evening spent as a little family!
