Okay…I’ve been MIA…but for good reason as you all know. I know…I know…I had off from work before the baby was born for 3 weeks and I neglected my blog and you all whined at me and I still didn’t give in and write a thing. My apologies. But here I am. And I pick up where I left off by writing about our birth story.
I had been back and forth to the doctor at least 2 times per week those last few weeks of pregnancy because my blood pressure was elevated and there was protein in my urine. Both of these could indicate preeclampsia…which after further tests was not the case but could have escalated to that stage at any point.
On Friday, January 12th I had a dr appointment. After a stress test and and ultrasound and exam the dr decided to send me to the hospital to get blood tests and to possibly stay and be induced. We were not prepared for that. Our dog needed to be walked and we didn’t have our hospital bag in the car. It was home, safe, warm and dry.
After a trip home we made our way to the hospital and arrived at about 6:30 P.M. They took blood and sent to the lab for results. The results came back fine but the dr said either we could stay and be induced that night…OR…we could go home and hope to go into natural labor on our own over the weekend…OR…we could go home and come back on Sunday to be induced. Either way we’d have the baby one way or another sooner rather than later. So we decided to stay and not delay the inevitable. I didn’t feel like I would go into labor on my own any time soon…my due date wasn’t until the 22nd…more than a week away. So we stayed.
At 9 p.m. they gave me Cervadil which would help soften the cervix and begin the process of getting my body ready for labor. I sent hubbie home for the night to get a good night sleep in our own bed…and told mom not to bother coming down yet. I barely slept a wink. I started to feel mild contractions by 4 A.M. but nothing I couldn’t handle and then they removed the Cervadil at 9 A.M. on Saturday morning and then we were to wait. We had to wait for a labor & delivery room to free up and we waited to see if I went into labor on my own. They made me walk around the halls which did nothing.
By 3 P.M. Saturday they had me in the L & D room and administered the Pitocin…a very very very small amount at a time so it didn’t hit me like a ton of bricks at once. By 10 P.M. Saturday night I had dialated to 4 cm and they broke my water…and holy moley there was a lot of it. I lasted a good 2 hours breathing through the contractions and then I was done. I knew this would be a long process, I hadn’t slept very much at all since Thursday into Friday and I would need to sleep in order to get through this…so I opted for the drugs. They were made for a reason…right?!!!! So at midnight I got the epidural…not a moment too soon!!!
And then I slept..thank God!
By 7:30/8 o’clock Sunday morning I could feel some pressure from the baby’s head moving into position. We waited it out to see what happened and at 9:15 A.M. I had the nurses check me and I was ready. The dr came in, I started pushing at 9:20 A.M. and at 9:37 A.M. (a whole 17 minutes later of pushing) we had our baby girl. Li’l Foot was born weighing 8 lbs 7.7 ozs. and was 20.5 inches long.
And now…we’ve been home for almost 2 weeks and we are absolutely in love. Li’l Foot is beautiful and such a good baby…so far…knock on wood!!! Teehee!!!
